Welcome from the President

Dear Academicians and guests,

Welcome to the website of the International Academy of Aviation and Space Medicine.  We hope that this site will enable visitors to gain an insight into the work and aims of our organisation, and trust that for our Academy members it will provide a valuable communications hub and source of information concerning our current and future activities.

The efforts and activities of the Academy are directed towards promoting advances in the knowledge and understanding of aeromedical sciences across international boundaries, to the support of education and research, and to the continuous improvement in standards of Aviation Medicine science and practice.  Our membership is made up of nationals from around 50 countries, enabling us to draw on a considerable wealth of experience from professionals with diverse backgrounds and varied interests in the pursuit of our mission.  We are an organisation that thrives on diversity, recognises no political or cultural divides, and is intent only on fostering the highest standards within the internationally based speciality of Aviation Medicine.  It is commitment to this goal that drives the work of the Academy and that draws together all of us who are interested and involved in these aims.

The primary educational and scientific outputs of the Academy are achieved through an annual congress that is held in varied centres around the world.  This International Congress of Aviation and Space Medicine (ICASM) brings together professionals working in Aerospace Medicine and provides a platform to present original scientific papers and to contribute to panels on topical subject areas.  While at all times ensuring scientific rigour in the selection of abstracts submitted for presentation at these meetings, the Academy remains particularly keen to encourage contributions from younger medical professionals and those still building their careers in aviation medicine.  With this group in mind, the Academy also sponsors aerospace medicine physicians in training by providing an annual scholarship to support attendance at one of the recognised quality international training programmes in Aviation Medicine.  More details of our scholarship scheme can be found on this website.

The Academy enjoyed an outstanding ICASM in Bucharest in September 2011 and is now starting to turn its attention to the 2012 meeting in Melbourne, Australia.  The plans and outline programme for this Congress are already well developed and they promise to deliver another high quality meeting.  I encourage all to consider attending and contributing to what I confidently believe will be another most exciting and stimulating symposium.  Links to the ICASM 2012 can be found on this website so do start thinking now about the abstract that you could submit for consideration.

One final reminder for Academy members - this is your web site to use and refer to, and to keep alive as a forum for information exchange, news and views.  So please use it!
